As a player, Chris Gumbley has toured with the Temptations, the Four Tops, the English Chamber Orchestra and the BBC Big Band and it was his membership of the Birmingham-based saxophone quintet 'Saxtet' which led to his taking up a teaching post at Birmingham Conservatoire which he held for 14 years. His career in music education includes travelling the world as an ABRSM examiner and much of the music he has written is listed in exam syllabi.
In his preface to 'solo flight', Chris Gumbley writes "This book represents an attempt to write for the clarinet in Various styles not normally associated with the instrument: from bebop through to folk, latin, funk and even hillbilly ..... The pieces are therefore stylistically as well as technically demanding but musically accessible and a bit different from what you'd normally expect."
