Having won a degree in music theory and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in music education at the Eastman School of Music, Ronald Caravan began his teaching career at the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University, New York in 1980 where he stayed until 2015, teaching clarinet and saxophone. He has published teaching material for both instruments which deals with the study of multiphonic, quarter tone and timbre variation techniques, and he has used those in some of his more notable compositions.

But a list of some fifteen of his published works also contains more 'traditionally' composed pieces including the sonatas for soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone which have gained wide popularity. The last of these - for baritone & piano, is a tuneful work of four strongly contrasting movements, showing modal influences, and in slow - fast - slow - fast format. The short first movement, 'Prologue', is written without bar-lines but marked 'Espressivo'. It is followed by a strongly rhythmic 'Allegro' which is certainly tuneful but dry and witty at the same time, reminiscent of Poulenc perhaps. The third movement, 'Song', is a thoughtful little piece dedicated to Caravan's fellow saxoponist John C. Worley, and leads to the 'Dance - Finale' which has a short slow middle section before returning to the cheerful opening music of this movement (and an opportunity for some 'slap tonguing') to end the sonata.
