"The Sonata for Horn and Piano is a prime example of Turner's neo-classical style, which is typical of his earlier compositions (1987-1993). It was composed using a traditional form (1st & 3rd movements are Sonata Allegro form and the 2nd movement is a type of Passacaglia), with traditional names of the movements. It was however clearly crafted with Turner's 'Texan' harmonies, melodies and rhythms. The work has enjoyed world-wide success despite its relative difficulty. It is very often included on repertoire lists for international horn solo competitions. It was recorded on CD by the composer with his pianist, Ludmila Cermakova and this recording can be found on the album 'Unlikely Fusion' on the EBS label." Kerry Turner
