SONATA AMOROSO

Yuri Povolotsky was born in Odessa (Ukraine) and studied composition at the Gnesin Music Academy in Moscow from where he graduated in 1986. In 1991 he moved to Israel where he now lives.
He composes symphonic and chamber works in various styles, and his music has been performed and broadcast all over the world. In recent years he has written pieces connected with Jewish themes and folklore. He was the artistic and musical director of the jazz-klezmer band “Apropos.art.” Povolotsky has participated in Jewish music festivals in Russia, Israel, Holland, and Poland. He has won prizes at the International Competition of Ethnic Music in Tel Aviv (2000) and at the International Festival “Sharq Taronalari” in Samarkand/Uzbekistan (2003).

The three movement 'Sonata Amoroso', which was a celebratory commission in 2020, runs true to its title by creating a romantic atmosphere and excluding dramatic conflict. It is concise and to the point but " .... at the same time saturated in figurative content, creat(ing) a single line, emphasizing the bright and serene mood of the entire work."
