SONATA BREVE

Dubois was a pupil of Darius Milhaud who was a prominent member of "Les Six", the loose knit group of French composers whose music reacted against the lushness of Wagner and the impressionism of Debussy and Ravel. Composing largely for woodwind and making use of unusual harmonies and textures, Dubois carried the light-hearted style of his teacher into the latter part of the twentieth century, no more so than in his 'Sonate Breve' which was published in 1965. The most striking feature of the first movement is the wide leaps in unexpected intervals which unsettle the listener - as was no doubt intended. The semi-quavers of the A-B-A form second movement 'vivo ...' are more chromatic but insistent so the slower tempo of the third movement brings some relief. The Finale starts with a lively two bar motif which reappears throughout the movement to give the feel of a rondo if not the form.
