This edition is a transcription for two B flat clarinets of Mozart’s 1775 B Flat Major KV292 Sonata for bassoon and cello. Little is known about the origins of the work. Its peculiar scoring may indicate that it was perhaps commissioned by some of the composer’s bassoonist or cellist friends. Or perhaps it was originally scored for two celli or bassoons and transcribed around 1800 by the Berlin publisher J.J. Hummel for various combinations of instruments, after which only the bassoon and cello edition survived. Or is it perhaps meant as a bassoon sonata with a basso continuo part? Whatever the case may be, we will never know, unless the original Mozart manuscript is discovered.
Despite the fact that is scored for two instruments, the Sonata is a substantial piece of music which can be played in any chamber music setting. It is also suitable for use in a teaching situation, because it is technically doable and musically interesting. In addition, it provides an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with Mozart’s style.
The Sonata consists of three sections arranged in the classical sequence of fast – slow – fast. There are very few indications of dynamics, neither in the original score, nor in this edition. This allows players much freedom in considering their own interpretation. The articulation signs are mere suggestions on the part of the publisher and players are at liberty to adjust these to their own preferences.
This edition for two B flat clarinets is in the original concert key of B Flat Major and can therefore be combined with the edition for bassoon and cello. It can therefore be performed as a duo for B flat clarinet and cello or B flat clarinet and bassoon.
