Mario Castelnuovo -Tedesco (MC-T) fled his native Italy for the USA in 1939 to escape the Fascist regime and, after a short stay in Washington DC, moved to Beverly Hills. Although he is now remembered mostly for his guitar music, MC-T's outstanding musical ear allowed him to compose quickly without the need of a piano and he was soon established in nearby Hollywood as a film and TV composer. He was contributing composer to the scores of hundreds of films and fully scored alone at least fourteen. His reputation was such that he taught film and TV composition to a variety of students including such luminaries as Jerry Goldsmith, Henry Mancini, Andre Previn, Nelson Riddle and John Williams.

MC-T composed in an eclectic style which assimilated musical Impressionism, Neo-Classicism and Neo-Romanticism, and he benefitted from instruction in counterpoint so as to skillfully weave melodies together. Written in 1945 but not published until 1977, his Clarinet Sonata Op. 128 is a good example of his style. Its romantic melodies are set within a classical structure interspersed with jazz inflections, particularly in the sonata form first movement, and the fourth movement finale ends the work in an energetic Rondo. An entertaining and challenging sonata which deserves to be played and heard more often.
  • Andante con moto
  • Scherzo mosso, leggiero
  • Lullaby, calme e semplice
  • Rondo alla Napolitana. Rapido e tagliente
