Poulenc began work on this sonata in September 1952 but, for a variety of reasons which are fully explained in the Historical Introduction, it was not completed until June 1957, eleven days before the composer and the flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal gave the world premiere at the Strasbourg Festival. J & W Chester's first published edition appeared in 1958 and the current edition was revised by Carl Schmidt and Patricia Harper and is dated 1994. Their very full introduction includes a bar by bar account of the editorial changes they have made and the no less than twelve manuscript, printed and recorded sources they have consulted. The concluding paragraph of the Historical Introduction says "....,the Sonata for Flute and Piano has become one of the most frequently performed and well-loved flute sonatas in the entire repertoire." Our record of sales certainly supports that view.
