Of the twelve Besozzi musicians who lived between 1661 and 1879, mentioned in Grove's Dictionary of Music & Musicians, ten were woodwind players of whom eight were oboists and one - Girolamo (or Jerome) - played the bassoon. This seems to be the main reason for attributing the present work to him, although some of the evidence is contradictory. In support is the fact that Girolamo composed several sets of sonatas with his oboist brother Alessandro(1702-1775) and that they were both together in Paris in 1735, according to Burney. The undated manuscript, which refers simply to a "Signor Bezozi" is held in the Library of the Paris Conservatoire and, considering all that together, the attribution seems reasonable.

In his introductory note, the editor William Waterhouse explains how he has worked from the manuscript to produce this edition, particularly the slow movement which was originally written with two alternative solo parts. Neither was completely satisfactory on its own, so he has produced a version which combines the two. Otherwise, the unfigured bass of the manuscript original has been preserved in the left hand of the piano accompaniment and phrasing, dynamics and suggested metronome speeds have been added.
