SONATA in G minor TWV41:g3

The first six of Telemann's twelve 'Methodical Sonatas' were published in Hamburg in 1728. It seems clear from the notation that numbers 3 and 4 were intended for the flute but the others suit the violin or flute equally well. Apart from their musical value, Telemann intended these sonatas to instruct and practise musicians in the ornamentation of a slow movement melody. He therefore set the simple melodic line on one stave with the same line ornamented in both the 'essential' French and the 'impromptu' Italian styles on a separate stave below. Comparison of the two would familiarize the musician with the method of 'gracing' a plain melody and so "perfect his taste".
