Richard Rodney Bennett had already been writing 12-tone music for two years when his Sonatina for solo flute was first performed at a concert of the Society for the Promotion of New Music in March 1955, and he was 19. The cheerful theme of the first movement obscures its 12-tone basis and the second movement, mostly in common time, is wistfully lyrical. The finale is in a dancing 6/8 which is both impudent and sophisticated. After the second performance at the 1955 Aldeburgh Festival, the sonatina started to make a name for itself with flautists as a showpiece.
