Eldin Burton studied piano and composition at Atlanta Conservatory, Georgia and at the Juilliard School in New York. He performed as a concert pianist in Atlanta and first played at Carnegie Hall, New York in 1949, a year after his Sonatina for Flute and Piano was published. It is the composer's arrangement of a piano piece he wrote for a Juilliard composition course and the Sonatina won the Composition Contest of the New York Flute Club in 1948 when the first performance was given by the flautist Samuel Baron, to whom the work is dedicated, with Burton accompanying him. The prize was an offer of publication by Schirmer which led to the present edition.

The first movement begins with a simple lyrical flute melody which goes on to alternate with energetic chromatic runs into the upper register. The second movement is in A-B-A form with A having the feel of a lament and B being a more aggressive high register middle section; and the third, in 6/8 time and high pitched, has all the joyfulness that it's tempo marking of 'Allegro giocoso' suggests.

  • II Andantino Sognando
  • III Allegro giocoso
