Wilhelm Popp studied the flute with Caspar Kummer and the great Louis Drouet in the 1850's and became pianist and flautist to the orchestra of the Saxon Court Theatre. In 1867 he left Coburg to take up the position of principal flute in the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Popp was a prolific composer of nearly six hundred original works and arrangements of popular melodies and operatic favourites of the time, most of them for flute and piano. His own compositions are tuneful and cover a wide range of difficulty so that they can be enjoyed by beginners on the flute to virtuosi.

His Sonatinas Op.388 were first published in Hamburg in 1888 and discovered in the British Museum Library by the internationally acclaimed flautist and teacher Susan Milan who has edited them by tidying up the articulation in places and correcting discrepancies between the flute and piano parts. She comments "These beautifully crafted works are all, without exception, a delight to play and suitable for a broad level of player. They are a lovely example of Classical style and detailed in a way that makes them a joy to perform ...."
  • 1. Allegro maestoso
  • 2. Romanze - Allegretto quasi andantino
