Philip Sparke is an Associate of the Royal College of Music where he was encouraged to write his own studies for the trumpet as part of the course he took on that instrument, the piano and in composition. This led to him writing solo pieces and teaching material for a wide range of brass and woodwind instruments, many of which appear in the syllabi of UK examination boards.
Sounds Classical for Clarinet is a collection of graded solos selected specifically for the developing clarinettist. Designed to correlate with grades 1-4 of the exam syllabus of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, the pieces are drawn from four centuries of classical repertoire ranging from Susato to Sullivan and will provide ideal material for practice or recital.

  • Susato - Les Grands Douleurs (Basse Danse No.6 from 'Danserye')
  • Pepusch arr. - Youth's the Season Made for Joys (from 'The Beggar's Opera')
  • Sullivan - Ah, Leave Me Not to Pine (from 'The Pirates of Penzance')
  • Vogel - Waltz
  • Anon. - Mr Scoolding's Minuet (from 'The Compleat Tutor to the Hautboy')
  • Handel - Bourrée (from 'Water Music')
  • Attwood - Theme and Variation (from Sonatina No.3)
  • Stölzel - Bist du bei mir (from 'Diomedes')
  • Brahms - Poco Allegretto (from Symphony No.3)
  • Grieg - Gratitude (from 'Lyric Pieces Op.62)
  • Batchelder - Andantino (from 'Vox Organi')
  • Purcell - When I am Laid in Earth (from 'Dido and Aeneas')
  • Babell - Allegro (Sonato I from '12 Sonatas')
  • Byrd - Lord Willobies Welcome Home (from 'My Ladye Nevells Booke of Virginal Music')
  • Vivaldi - Allegro (Finale from 'Flute Sonata')
  • Mozart - Adagio (KV Anh.94 [580a])
