The original work, for clarinet and piano (RD001), was commissioned by and dedicated to the clarinettist Ian Haysted. Southwold is a beautiful town on the Suffolk coast of England that has been totally untouched by what some regard as ‘progress’. The Sonatina, like Southwold itself, is built along traditional lines. Whilst being tonal and melodic, it also has strong rhythmic foundations. The movements are named after and depict three of my favourite parts of the town. - James Rae, April 2005
Roy Greaves is the Associate Artistic Director of the Wychwood Clarinet Choir in Toronto, Canada. This arrangement of James Rae’s Southwold Sonatina was written for the choir and its Artistic Director, Michele Jacot.

Southwold is a beautiful town on the Suffolk coast of England that has been totally untouched by what some regard as ‘progress’. Even the railway ceased to operate in 1929! However, for those ‘in the know’, it is possibly the most relaxing place on the planet!
