Roma Cafolla draws on both her Italian and Northern Irish roots to write music which has a Mediterranean flavour coupled with an Irish folk tradition. She writes in a variety of moods and styles for a range of abilities, from the simple and naïve to the technically complex and deeply emotional, but by contrast, there are works full of humour and light hearted Celtic charm.

The 'Suite de Danses' consists of five original pieces in the form and style of dances which were popular in European 'High Society' of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, although their origins may well be earlier. They were usually played in the order which Roma Cafolla follows here.
The first is a substantial Prelude of 78 bars in 4/4 time which looks to be strongly idiomatic of the period.
Then comes an Allemande, an elaborate and quite slow court dance of German origin, followed by a …..
Courante (France), in triple time and "Staccato in nature and lively in performance."
The Sarabande probably originated in Spain as a slow courtly dance in triple time, as it is here.
The set ends with a Gigue, a form said to be derived from the Irish jig but with Italian influences which give it its name.

  • II. Allemande
  • III. Courante
  • IV. Sarabande
  • V. Gigue
