SUITE IN THE OLD STYLE

Lloyd succeeded Samuel Sebastian Wesley as organist of Gloucester Cathedral in 1876 and, via the position of organist at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and the Headship of Music at Eton College, he became organist of the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace five years before his death. Although he was a composer mainly of Church and Choral music, Lloyd seems to have been attracted by the clarinet whilst a student at Oxford. His interest in the instrument came to fruition in 1914 with the publication of his 'Suite in the Old Style' which he dedicated to Elgar's favourite clarinettist, Charles Draper who gave the first performance on 9th June that year.
