TANGO AND CHARLESTON

As a child, Trevor Hold showed talent at the piano and was composing at the age of 11. After a year of studying English at Nottingham University he changed to a Music Course, won a first class degree and went into music education where he found opportunities to compose. His favourite genre was song and he wrote 44 song cycles & individual songs, a third of which are settings of his own poetry while others reflect Hold's love for his native Northamptonshire and set the work of its best known poet, John Clare. He shared with Benjamin Britten a firm belief that a composer should write for the community in which he or she lives. Besides 19 orchestral works, Trevor Hold wrote 20 which involve wind instruments and "Tango and Charleston" is one of two pieces he wrote for alto saxophone and piano.
The Tango is wistful and uses the alto saxophone's lower register to good effect. It leads straight into the Charleston which cheerfully caricatures itself in the central section.
