Although this collection of twelve pieces spans more than 250 years, it is weighted towards the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries and includes transcriptions for bassoon of two pieces written for other instruments by renowned composers of that period. The accomplished solo and orchestral bassoonist and teacher Amy Harman has written an engaging preface in which she extols the versatility of her instrument and how that has been exploited by composers over nearly three centuries. She follows this with a carefully researched and entertaining biographical note on each composer represented and offers little gems of advice on how to bring out the character of the twelve pieces which make up this anthology.

A good mix of solo with piano pieces for the intermediate level bassoonist. This publication has pieces that feature in ABRSM exam lists.
