THE CROSSING POINT (score)

The Crossing Point was commissioned by the City of London Sinfonia for performance on the occasion of my fiftieth birthday. It is the third in a tetralogy of orchestral pieces, the first of which is A Street Under Siege, a work written in response to the horrors of the Balkans War. The ideas for The Crossing Point were inspired by the intersection of deserted streets, the crossing in church architecture (hence the chorale theme at the opening) and to the crossing of borders that have been created as a result of conflicts. Having married across the Iron Curtain I have had personal experience of travelling across heavily militarised borders and being separated from family. The title also relates to the word pike (meaning both point and toll-gate).

All the pieces in the tetralogy are related structurally, beginning with a gradual divergence from the notes D and A, and each of the four works uses intervals moving three or four steps further out in contrary motion. A Crossing Point begins at the halfway stage in the cycle with a fifth on A flat and E flat, gradually progressing out to F and G flat.

After the depiction of conflict in the first two works I wanted to write a piece which reveals something of the power of the human spirit and to portray the individual’s ability to overcome adversity. There are allusions to the number fifty (five rising intervals of a tenth) as well as ideas based on a monogram which link both structurally and emotionally to the chorale theme and the diverging fifth.
