Before joining BBC Radio 3 as a Commissioning and Programme Editor, where he was also Controller of the 2015 Proms season, Edward Blakeman was a freelance flautist, writer and presenter. He was head of the Wind Department at the London College of Music and a member of the Council of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

In the Introduction to 'The Flute Player's Companion', he emphasizes and explains the five main points of flute technique. The fifty-five exercises, studies and duets which follow are grouped under the four headings 'Warming Up, Tone, Facility and Articulation' to practise those main points. This collection has been drawn from a wide and varied range of methods and studies by noted European flautists/teachers/composers of the nineteenth century, and some earlier. "Any worthy companion should be interesting as well as instructive. Such, at least, is the aim of this collection."
