Myra Verney was born in 1905 and was the youngest member of a well-known musical family. Her eldest sister was the late Harriet Cohen CBE, the pianist. Her second sister was Olga Verney, graduate in violin of the Guildhall School of Music in London. All three sisters composed. Their father Joseph Verney had an orchestral piece performed at an early Promenade Concert and later became a master of the technique of composing for military band. His works were regularly performed at the Kneller Hall School of Music.
Myra was discouraged by her family from following a musical career and read English at Somerville College, Oxford. During her time there she wrote incidental music for the Antigone of Sophocles, and Herbert Howells awarded her the Championship Cup at the now defunct Hampstead and Hendon Music Festival for his music. After leaving Oxford she won a scholarship to study singing in France with Ninon Vallin and became a professional singer. She died in 1993.
