After studying classical flute at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Mike Mower, who also plays the saxophone and clarinet, pursued a career as a freelance musician and composer. He has played and recorded with a variety of artists in the jazz, rock and classical fields including Gil Evans, Tina Turner, Paul Weller, Björk and James Galway. As a composer and arranger, he has written for numerous big bands including the BBC Big Band and Radio Orchestra and the NDR Radio Big Band, besides his work for smaller ensembles ranging from saxophone quartets to string quartets.
Mike Mower founded the "Itchy Fingers" saxophone quartet in 1986 and led it to international success for eleven years, taking the name for his music publishing business which, amongst many more of his compositions, produces "The Good-Tempered Saxophone". This is a collection of 48 unaccompanied pieces intended to entertain an audience as well as the player, so they should not be thought of simply as studies. They incorporate the different genres and styles which Mike Mower has assimilated - jazz, blues, rock and pop and are presented in order of increasing difficulty to help the player track his or her progress.
