Rossini's one act comic opera 'La Scala di Seta' (The Silken Ladder) was first performed at the Teatro San Moise in Venice on 9th May 1812. One source reports it as a failure and, despite its well paced comedy and the energy of the young Rossini's scoring, the opera was hardly performed outside Italy. The overture has faired better, driven on in performance by Rossini's ever increasing rhythm and sustained by attractive melodies set out in sonata form and brilliant writing for the winds, it continues to appear in concert programmes.
Myron Zakopets was born into a family of village musicians in present day Poland, in 1932. He graduated from the Lviv Music Conservatory (western Ukraine) in 1964 and went on to teach the oboe at Lviv Music College where he became Head of Wind. As well as appearing as soloist with the Lviv Symphony Orchestra, Zakopets published educational material for woodwind instruments and arrangements for winds, of which this is one.
