Mary Chandler studied music privately with Harry Farjeon for composition and Harold Craxton piano. She went to Oxford University to read English and taught the subject in London Schools from 1934 but, with Leon Goosens as teacher, she took up the oboe from scratch in 1940 and four years later was principal oboe of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, a post she held until 1958, appearing as soloist and as composer of programmed works. In 1960 Mary Chandler was appointed Area Director of the then Kent Music School, in charge of wind teaching and the activities at its Tonbridge Music Centre. She retired to Gloucestershire in 1971 but continued to be actively involved in music - examining, organizing concerts and composing until she died in 1996.

Chamber music amounts to approximately half of the total of about one hundred compositions by Mary Chandler, and a good proportion of that is for wind ensembles or mixed wind and strings. But little of her music has been published so we are fortunate that 'Three Dance Studies' for oboe and piano are available. The contrasting and geographically spread pieces are:-

Habanera - A rhythmic dance in slow syncopated duple time, originating from Cuba.
Valse Sentimentale - A sensitive and expressive waltz
Magyar - A lively finale in the style of a Hungarian folk dance.
  • Habanera
  • Valse Sentimentale
  • Magyar
