Gordon Lawson''s Three Miniatures for horn and piano, his only work for this medium, is a welcome addition to the horn repertoire as a suite of recital pieces without being too demanding. They are colourful and melodic, showing a real sense of partnership, but also containing quite individual and pianistically conceived accompaniments.
The Prelude is concise with a flowing melodic phrase at the opening, taken up by the soloist, in contrast to some rhythmic syncopation in the centre of the piece. The Arulllo has an infectious melodic lilt throughout, which is given equally to soloist and accompanist. The Scherzino is jolly and predominantly based on the interval of the perfect 4th. The middle section is reflective and explores sonorities in the keyboard with four little 'asides' from the soloist over its wide range, eventually reaching an exciting climax before returning to the opening mood.
