Ian Clarke is known within the flute world as one of its leading player/composers and his works have been performed around the globe in recitals, competitions and at Rock Festivals. They have been described as ".....some of the most exciting flute repertoire of today.....",so it is no surprise that they have been warmly welcomed by both international performers and institutions and individuals within music education.

'Hypnosis' has its roots in Ian Clarke's work with two other members of the rock band with which he performed and recorded in the late 1980's and was developed by him into a piece for flute and piano in 1994. The opening bass line of the original has been kept and the flute part is described as being ".....naturally expressive, free and organic....." but without requiring extended techniques. The easier versions of runs are printed within the piece with the more difficult alternatives above.

'Spiral Lament' was commissioned by a friend of Ian Clarke's to celebrate her giant African Snails which fascinated him "... like looking through a window into a strange and wondrous alien world." This inspired him to use techniques which may be unfamiliar and to help both intermediate and advanced players to tackle them, Clarke has included some exercises "....that will give you a plan of attack should you need one." The piece is intended not only to be descriptive but also to raise a sense of the wonder of living things.

'The Mad Hatter' is described on Ian Clarke's website as being....."Quick and playful throughout (it) makes extensive use of whole tones, chromatic and diminished scales. No extended techniques, open-holes or B foots are required. The piano part is of moderate difficulty. This piece requires a good conventional technique with clean accurate finger work and a real sense of rhythm and fun."
