Having received both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from DePaul University in Chicago, Robert Muczynski taught at the same university, Loras College and Roosevelt University before settling in Tucson in the 1960s where he was composer-in-residence and chairman of the composition department at the University of Arizona until his retirement in 1988.

His catalogue of published compositions exceeds fifty and includes the accompanied sonatas for flute and alto saxophone and 'Time Pieces' for clarinet and piano, all of which are performed at recitals in the USA and abroad, and his orchestral works appear in concert programmes.

The Three Preludes, Op.18 were written in 1962 and, despite their title, were intended as encores. It has been said that the composer did not find this first attempt at writing for an unaccompanied instrument easy. There is nothing but the bare solo line so that his musical ideas are remorselessly exposed and vulnerable somehow. As well as the conventional Italian tempo markings, the composer has headed each piece with a comment on its character in English and apparently given further single word playing directions - see Contents.

  • Andante molto - (freely), "nocturnal"
  • Allegro molto - spirited, well-accented, "free-wheeling"
