There are reasons to doubt the attribution of these three sonatas to J.S.Bach as the editor Alfred Dürr discusses in detail in his Preface. At first sight, BWV 1033 seems most likely to be the work of Johann Sebastian because of the testimony to that effect of his oldest son Carl Philipp Emanuel recorded in 1731 when he was still living in the family home. But doubts arise when the composing style is examined and similarities in style with BWV 1031 are found. BWV 1020 is described as a sister work, based on the model of the other two sonatas, but with stylistic differences.

Alfred Dürr offers his 'tentative hypothesis' that C.P.E Bach wrote all three sonatas, with a good deal of help from his father for BWV 1033 and 1031, and much less help with BWV 1020 so that he felt justified in signing it himself. It may be that the question of the authenticity of these three sonatas is never resolved, but that doesn't diminish their value as, in the editor's words translated " …. a welcome contribution to the somewhat sparse supply of really good flute music from Bach's time."
