The Tres Modos Ritmicos were written in 1962 and are all based on Latin American rhythms. The Cinquillo (literally 'little five') comes from Cuba and is a characteristic rhythm which is usually played on the claves (two wooden cylinders) in such dances as the Son and Rumba. Yaravi is from Peru and is of Indian origin. Strictly speaking there is no precise rhythm of a Yaravi, but this type of piece consists of a number of sung phrases over a monotonous drum beat, each phrase beginning and ending with a long held note. The Batuque comes from Brazil and is similar in character to a samba. It is however more primitive than the samba and shows much more African influence.
- Leonard Salzedo 1981
