Edward Gregson retired from formal music education in 2008, having been Principal of the Royal Northern College of Music for the preceding twelve years. He was then able to concentrate on his composing career which had started in 1962 and encompasses a wide range of genres including works for orchestra, solo instruments, brass band, theatre, film and television, so that he now has a list of some 130 compositions to his name. Gregson has been described as ".....0ne of the most significant British composers currently active in this country." (R Matthew-Walker, International Record Review, January 2011) and ".....a superb craftsman, with great orchestral flair and genuine melodic gifts." (I. March, Gramophone, November 2003).
In a note which prefaces "Tributes", Edward Gregson writes of the five dedicatee composers "As a tribute to them I have tried to invade their stylistic worlds, as well as hopefully retaining some of my own world of musical expression. Each piece is also dedicated to a different clarinettist with whom I have enjoyed enduring musical relationships:" (see Contents) "Tributes" was first performed by Michael Collins (clarinet) accompanied by Michael McHale in October 2010 at the City Halls in Glasgow, as part of a BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Recital.
