The trio ‘Trioique’ was commissioned by Groningen’s GAMMA Composer Group in 2003. It was premiered in 2004 by Magda Nip (oboe), Annan voor de Wind (Clarinet) and Henk Jansen (bass clarinet). For De Klarinet Music Publishing, Marieke has re-arranged her composition for B-flat or E-flat clarinet, B-flat clarinet and bass clarinet. Both versions are available from the publisher.
The trio consists of three parts, with each voice presenting its own solos. There is a great deal of room for the individual players to assert themselves, but there are also moments when the three instruments blend together in wonderful harmonies.
The first part is called Énergique and has a happy and lively character. Its prevailing mood is one of unrest, which is introduced in the first bars by an agitated figure for the bass clarinet. The piece ends, however, in an almost pastoral harmony, with all instruments finishing the piece in an open fifth. The second part, Féerique, has the instruments play mostly in the same octave, creating jarring harmonies which lend it a fairytale atmosphere. This mood is even made more poignant by a high-pitched solo for bass clarinet or bassoon and the muted trills for the E-flat or B-flat clarinet or oboe. In the opening bars of the third part, Caractéristique, the B-flat clarinet plays an organ-like motive against a background of surprisingly fast runs on the B-flat of E-flat clarinet. The part then shifts to another, more mischievous mood, set by the contrasting elements of the appoggiatura for the B-flat or E-flat clarinet and the lyrical solo for B-flat clarinet. The piece then continues with an optimistic theme before returning to the first theme.
