TROPARION (2nd Edition)

Troparion' is one of the composer's most popular and intriguing recital pieces.
A troparion is a chanted hymn of one stanza - in this case, Christos Anesti - the famous paschal (Easter) monody dating back to at least the sixth century A.D., and possibly as far back as the second.
The text reads: "Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and to those within the tomb restoring life!"
After the short, introductory declamation ('apechema'), the melody instrument begins the first section by playing the accompanied chant. The next section consists entirely of original music, composed as an answer to the gestures, spirit, emotion and decorative rhythms of the chant. After a re-statement of the apechema, the third section begins. Here the chant can be heard in the right hand of the piano part, whilst the melody instrument plays an original contrapuntal line. The fourth section is, again, original. The piece concludes with a short coda, re-utilising the apechematic material.
Troparion can be heard in the accompanying YouTube video.
