Concert rags by pianist and composer Brian Dykstra, perfect for a bass clarinet recital. Composed in the style of Joplin, but with a more contemporary style incorporating elements of later jazz styles. The Curly Maple Rag is slow and melancholy, while the Lancashire Rag is upbeat with a raucous coda section featuring the low end of the bass clarinet range.

Brian Dykstra is Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music at The Wooster College in Wooster, Ohio, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1969. He received the B.S. degree in Piano from The Juilliard School of Music in New York City and the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Piano from The Eastman School of Music in Rochester. He studied for an additional year at the Mozarteum Academy in Salzburg, Austria on a Fulbright grant. As a pianist he has performed extensively both classical music and ragtime. He has made three LP recordings of ragtime music and a compact disc, entitled Original Rags which includes fifteen of his own compositions for piano solo. Spring Beauties, one of his piano rags, won first prize in the 1997 Ragtime Composition Contest sponsored by the Scott Joplin International Foundation of Sedalia, Missouri. Many of his compositions and arrangements, mainly for children, are published.
