Lefevre left his native Switzerland to study clarinet with Michael Yost in Paris, and made his debut as a soloist at the age of twenty. For twenty-six years from 1791 he played in the orchestra of the Paris Opera, combining that with the post of principal clarinet in the Imperial Chapel from 1807. He was one of the nineteen founding professors of the Paris Conservatoire in 1795 and it was seven years later that his 'Methode de Clarinette' was adopted there. It is still in print over two hundred years later. As well as his invention of the c#'/g#'' key, Lefevre left, for clarinet, seven concertos, seven sonatas with bass, forty-eight clarinet duets and six trios for two clarinets and bassoon.

The two sonatas published here are amongst the twelve sonatas for two clarinets which make up the third and final part of the 'Methode' of 1802, mentioned above. The editor has transcribed the first clarinet part as the solo Bb clarinet line and transposed that to concert pitch on the stave below to provide for flute or oboe, as stated in the title. He has based the left hand of the piano accompaniment on the second clarinet part of the duets and filled out the rest of the accompaniment from that. This produces two attractive and tuneful sonatas for clarinet and piano in an early classical style, each with three varied movements.
