By the age of thirty-three Boismortier had settled in Paris and begun a career as composer and music publisher which was to yield over one hundred of his own works over the next twenty-three years. He prospered by his own efforts without the support of a wealthy patron - a rarity in the musical life of the eighteenth century. Motets, cantatas and opera-ballets make up a fair part of his catalogue but instrumental chamber music dominates in the form of concertos, sonatas, trios and suites for a variety of wind and stringed instruments. Boismortier is credited with introducing the Italian concerto form to French music.
The composer published his Opus 50 sonatas in 1734 and it is that first edition which has been used in the preparation of this. Although not expressly for the bassoon (he might have had the cello equally in mind) they are well suited to the instrument in bringing out the strong contrast between the intense slow movements and the faster ones which are often in dance form
