The seven contemporary British and American composers whose pieces are included in this collection were asked to provide biographical information about, for example "Individuals who have most inspired you", "A quote that you feel best describes your music in general" and "Your two favourite books". Their answers make interesting reading.

The editor of 'Unbeaten Tracks' for bassoon, John Orford began his career as principal bassoon with the London Sinfonietta in 1982 and has since appeared with all the major British orchestras. He has taught at the Royal Academy of Music and held the professorship of Bassoon at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In the preface he writes "The bassoon is often over-looked as a solo instrument, and a fresh collection of not just interesting, but entertaining pieces is long overdue. …… "This colourful and varied collection is a tribute to the composers' enthusiasm and skill. I hope that you enjoy playing these pieces, each with their different challenges, as much as I have. If one or two seem difficult at first, keep up the effort and the rewards are tremendous!"

  • Carl Davis - Mr Jeremy Fisher
  • Michael Daugherty - Bell-Bottom Blues
  • Richard Bissill - Hector Unravelled
  • Fraser Trainer - Song for Connie
  • Bernd Franke - Prambanan
  • Paul Hart - Andante
