The pianist, conductor and composer Carl Reinecke was one of the most respected and influential musicians in Germany during the second half of the 19th century. He was attracted by Motte-Fouqué's retelling and embellishment of the Undine myth, which is classical in origin, and tells of a water sprite who wants to become fully human. To achieve this, she must acquire a human soul which she does by marrying an ordinary mortal. All is well until he betrays her, she kills him with a kiss and dies herself to be revived as a spring which enfolds his grave. Although Reinecke's sonata was written for flute and piano and published in 1882, it is thought that he also had the A clarinet in mind at the same time. His own transposition for that instrument was published in 1885 and includes some passages lowered by an octave, not because they were out of the A clarinet's range but to use its timbre in that register to better effect.

  • Intermezzo - Allegretto grazioso
  • Pi Lento (quasi Andante)
  • Andante molto tranquillo
  • Finale - Allegro molto (agitato ed appassionato, quasi Presto)
