VALSE NOIRE

Valse Noire was written in 2006 for Nigel Black and Vladimir Ashkenazy for inclusion on a CD of music for horn and piano entitled Corno Cantabile.
A brief piano introduction leads to the main melody that hauntingly twists over shifting harmonies. The middle section is freer and no longer in waltz time as the lugubrious horn line is supported by somewhat jazzier, decorated harmonies. The main theme returns, gathering momentum as it hurtles to the finish.
