Hans Tolhuijs wrote his composition ‘Wervelingen’ (‘Turbulences’) in 2009 for the Lignum clarinet ensemble of Leiden.
The compositions of Hans Tolhuijs (1949) are characterized by an individual sense of colour and a compact formal language. Even though his work can easily be recognized as contemporary, it is still very much accessible and aesthetically pleasing. Hans has confessed to being slightly annoyed by what he calls ‘beep-grunt’ music and always writes with the listener in mind. His works have been played by the ‘De Ereprijs’ orchestra of the town of Apeldoorn, the ‘Magogo’ string orchestra of Tilburg and the Rotterdam ‘heNK’ mixed choir.
The composer talks about Turbulences: “Turbulences are caused by focusing air that moves very fast. This composition is a representation of this phenomenon. Turbulences also come into play inside the mouthpieces of the various instruments which are featured in this composition. Thank God, one would say, otherwise things would remain very quiet …”
