On 14 November 1943, as the newly appointed Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein achieved overnight success by standing in for Bruno Walter to conduct a broadcast concert from Carnegie Hall. So began a worldwide conducting career which was to last for nearly 50 years, produce over 400 recordings and numerous television appearances which introduced and examined music for mass audiences, particularly the young.

Throughout his career, Bernstein composed in a wide variety of genres which include ballet; opera - 'Candide' stands out; orchestral music - including 3 symphonies; choral music - notably 'Chichester Psalms' , chamber, vocal and piano music; and musicals. 'West Side Story' is the best known of these and probably the most loved. The plot is based on Skakespeare's Romeo & Juliet and Stephen Sondheim made his debut in writing the lyrics which Bernstein set to a score made up of "jazz, Latin rhythms, symphonic sweep and musical-comedy conventions in groundbreaking ways for Broadway". The show opened there in 1957 and ran for 732 performances before going on tour, since when it has been performed all over the world and then revived.

This is a collection of 10 of the most popular of the 17 musical numbers in the show in arrangements for flute and piano. They have been specially adapted for this publication while remaining faithful to Bernstein's score.

Bought this book to investigate Trinity grade 6 repertoire and have enjoyed playing all the songs myself. Nice arrangements for piano, some of the flute parts are high so flute players will need good technique in third octave.
