Composer:Harrold, Ian (b.1942)
Instrumentation:fl. ob. cl. bn. hn.
Publisher Ref:W0532
The third of my operetta trilogy features the theatre music of Johann Strauss (son). The first movement uses material from Die Fledermaus: the long introduction in F minor from the opening of the Act I trio So muss allein ich bleiben; the scherzo-like main theme of the Allegro vivo is my own and it leads to the rest of the trio (O je it does!). The development brings in the Watch Duet, and the coda a bit of the Overture. The slow movement looks to Der Zigeunerbaron. It starts atmospherically with the nature picture preceding the opening chorus, then the csárdás-inflected Hier in dieser Land, then the Act 2 Duo (Und mild sang die nachtigall) returning to the csárdás. For the dance movement, using Eine Nacht in Venedig (A night in Venice), I have written a Marche militaire Française (i.e. a fast 2/4) mostly me but quoting a bit of the opening chorus; the Trio is slower and features the Gondola Song from the end of Act I. For the finale we get (at last!) a waltz. The Rondo-waltz is my own (a bit danse macabre-ish) and the three episodes are the principal waltzes from (respectively): Die Fledermaus, Der Zigeunerbaron, Eine Nacht in Venedig. Such fun! IH
