Instrumentation:fl. ob. cl. bn. hn.

This quintet turned out to be more of a suite, with fancy titles. The first movement, The Perennial Optimist, is a happy-go-lucky Allegro vivace in sonata form, after a rather ‘doomy’ (but mercifully short!) slow introduction. The second movement, The Misty Loch, is a set of variations, except the pentatonic theme never varies as it is played by each instrument in turn, the variation being in the accompaniment. A contrasting middle section worms its way into the final two variations. The third movement, The Old Carousel, is a sort of lop-sided waltz (3/4+3/8), which has to stop for breath occasionally, particularly at the end; in the Trio, the horn and bassoon decide they want to play in a standard 9/8 rhythm – the others try to put them off. The Finale, The Blacksmith, starts as a fugue, but suddenly Handel’s The Harmonious Blacksmith (that nickname is a complete fiction!) came into my mind and the rest of the movement combines the two.
