WIND QUINTET No.2 in G minor (score & parts)

The Allegro starts immediately and is in a pretty standard sonata form. The second subject is one of my ‘wandering’ tunes with each section in a briefly different key (think Prokofiev Lieutenant Kijé Wedding scene) returning in the nick of time whence it started. The movement ends in G major. The second movement opens with an amiable 6/8 tune repeated with decorations; a central fugal section follows, until the initial tune returns with hints of the fugue. A scherzo follows in a brisk 3/8 where much is made of the opening rising fifth fanfare. The Trio introduces a more legato theme still starting with the rising fifth; after the Da Capo there is an extended coda. The Finale starts with an adaptable G minor theme which propels much of the movement with much contrapuntal writing, not really a fugue this time, but a chance for everyone to play bits of the theme. There is a contrasting second tune, but this is not developed and the piece ends uncompromisingly in G minor.
