The slow introduction establishes the chord sequence which begins the Allegro vivace proper. Various ideas come and go, but the fanfare-like phrase at letter B plays an important part later. The Intermezzo is what I have called a huapango. I had in mind America! in West Side Story with its alternating bars of 6/8 and 3/4, but rather gentler. A central scherzo-like section leads to a reprise of the huapango, but with elaboration. The Rondo-finale does what it says on the tin, with plenty of opportunities for fuguing!

The slow introduction establishes the chord sequence which begins the Allegro vivace proper. Various ideas come and go, but the fanfare-like phrase at letter B plays an important part later. There is, of course, a big tune for the second subject, and the sonata-form continues as you would expect. As I was writing the F minor Andante con variazione some of the accompanying phrases reminded me of the Welsh song David of the White Rock (not really a folk song, it was composed in the late 18th century by the eponymous harpist David Owen); the final variation/coda presents the tune in full.
The Intermezzo is what I have called a huapango, although there are many versions of this Mexican dance. I had in mind America! in West Side Story with its alternating bars of 6/8 and 3/4, but rather gentler. A central scherzo-like section leads to a reprise of the huapango, but with elaboration. The Rondo-finale does what it says on the tin, with plenty of opportunities for fuguing (the quick quavers of the opening oboe theme are in fact a twelve-note tone row, though the key of A flat is never far away). David makes a final appearance just before the end, as does the fanfare of the first movement. (Try to bring out the grand descending scale at letter K.)
