WIND QUINTET No.3 (score & parts)

After a mock-portentous Introduction, the principal theme of the Allegro con brio is a Schoenbergian tone-row using all twelve semitones, except I have tried to make it the tuniest Schoenbergian tone-row I could, so it is solidly in F major! It does undergo the prescribed inversion later, and leads after a while to a cantabile tune on the oboe. The rest is standard sonata-form. (I have come to think over the years since I wrote the piece that it is long enough without the exposition repeat!). The second movement follows the form of Haydn’s ‘double variations’ with F minor occasionally brightening to F major leading to a reprise of the Introduction music and an extended Coda. The dance movement is a Tango Argentine, so be passionate but observe the usual minuet/scherzo model for repeats. The Finale is a rondo where the main theme has gaps in it; you just know they are going to be filled in later as, indeed, they are! Other tunes come and go, then the Introduction intrudes one final time, but a rush to the end finishes the piece off. One of my favourite quintets.
