Printed Edition
Composer:Harrold, Ian (b.1942)
Instrumentation:fl. ob. cl. bn. hn.
Publisher Ref:W0530
This is the first of a trilogy of quintets using melodies from my favourite operetta composers, here Offenbach. After a minor 5/4 introduction, a tune of my own starts the Allegro ma non troppo. Soon is heard the Rondeau des Métamorphoses from Act II of Orphée aux enfers where the gods and goddesses mock Jupiter for the disguises he uses to seduce women on earth. The ‘second subject’ is my own, though it hints at the Rondeau and even La Marseillaise, the Coda uses the Galop where everyone dashes downwards to have fun in Hades (not the Can-can yet!). The second movement is based on the Letter song from La Périchole and the famous Barcarolle from Les Contes d’Hoffmann. The dance movement is a Polonaise, where I have tried to shoe-horn in Paris’s aria Au mont Ida from La belle Hélène; the Trio is based on the Valse from later in the operetta. Finally, the Finale and, yes, it’s time to Can-can! IH
