Born in 1961 in Iserlohn / Germany, Martin Herchenr''der studied organ (with Ludger Lohmann and Wolfgang Stockmeier) music theory (with Dieter Gostomsky) and composition (with Jurg Baur and Hans Werner Henze) at the Cologne Musikhochschule, and engaged in supplementary studies in Musicology and German at the Cologne University.
In 1994 Martin Herchenr''der was appointed professor of music theory at the Siegen University in Germany in the fields of research and teaching, including composition, orchestration, music theory, music of the 20th century and organ music. He has also been teaching at the Cologne Musikhochschule from 1992 to 2009. In 1998 he was invited to visit as a guest artist the School of Music of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver B.C. / Canada. In 2008 he visited as a guest professor and Fulbright scholar the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, NY. Since then he is a regular guest at Eastman. He was invited to various universities and schools throughout Europe and North America, including the University of Chicago, the McGill University, Montreal, and the Juilliard School of Music, New York, NY, USA; he initiated various cooperations between the University of Siegen and North American universites (Eastman, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, UFL etc.).

Martin Herchenröder’s compositions have been performed in Europe, Asia and America, e.g. by Markus Stockhausen (trumpet), Alban Gerhardt and Michael Sanderling (cello), Hans Davidsson and Werne r Jacob (organ), the Arditti String quartet and others, recorded on CD and broadcast by many European and American radio stations. He has received commissions from German cities and orchestras, various institutions in Europe and the USA, and by the WDR Radio and Television at Cologne; he is recipient of awards for his works (e.g. Deutscher Musikrat). His compositions have been published by Bärenreiter / Kassel and other publishers.

Martin Herchenröder also performs as a solo organist, his repertoire comprising works from the Renaissance to the music of our time (with accents on the compositions of J.S.Bach and works of the 20th century; with many first performances). For the WDR broadcasting corporation (Cologne) and CD companies he has recorded works of various centuries.

Martin Herchenröder works as a musicologist – his main publications deal with contemporary organ music (book on György Ligeti’s organ works), contemporary music, and music theory.
