As an organist of 50 years' experience, I was glad when a recent widow in our parish choir requested this piece at her late husband's memorial service ~ at which it went down very well, on its merits and as a favourite of his.
Circumstances else aside, I can quite see why this, previously unfamiliar to me, was one he had treasured, and I shall hope to make occasional use of it in other contexts ~ being more than happy to point any enquirers in the publishers' direction should they wish to acquaint themselves with it more directly.
Given that the solo part is transposed from concert pitch, I reckoned it would be overtaxing my musicianship to lightly adapt the accompaniment for the pipe organ more or less as otherwise written, under 'performance' conditions, while simultaneously ~ and smoothly ~ soloing a line that needed transposing as I went. (Standard transposition training for organists usually only entails 'moving everything in one go', e.g. playing a whole SATB piece, up or down by a tone or so, from open-score in whatever clefs, but at least all in the same key! No doubt any bandmasters, happily reading multiple staves and shifts, might find that effete ~ anyone out there with experience of playing that calibre of score straight out on 'the organ as wind band', pedals & all? I daresay Ernest Tomlinson could & did ... ) So I fear I did cheat a bit, pragmatically enough, by jotting the actual Clt. notes at 'real'concert pitch, in pencil onto the keyboard's treble stave. After that, 90% of the piece more or less played itself ~ and would sound even better on an organ with an expressive orchestral-clarinet rank, but other options can still usually be found that carry the line and character.
It's a delightful composition altogether, and I defy anyone not to enjoy this delightful (& perhaps unjustly neglected) gem.
