By 1720 Bach had completed the set of six Sonatas (or Partitas) for Unaccompanied Violin (BWV 1001-1006) but they were not published until 1802. They remained largely unknown until well into the nineteenth century when they became a significant part of repertoire of the celebrated violinist Joseph Joachim (1831-1907). The set is now considered to be amongst the finest and most expressive works ever written for solo violin.

The first ten items in this collection are transcriptions of movements from Bach's Six Sonatas BWV 1001-1006 made by the highly esteemed clarinettist and arranger Eric Simon (1907-1994) who was also a well-respected teacher of the clarinet and taught Benny Goodman.

The second half of the book is given over to duets which Eric Simon took from a variety of Bach sources including the 'Well-tempered Clavier' (BWV 846-893), 'Two Part Inventions' (BWV 772-801) and the 'Note-Book for Anna Magdelena Bach'. We have him to thank for making these twenty fine examples of Bach's work available to the progressing clarinettist.
